ESIM Chemicals

Last month, an affiliate of Sun European Partners completed the acquisition of ESIM Chemicals, a leading global manufacturer of high-quality agriculture and crop protection chemicals. Headquartered in Linz, Austria, ESIM focuses on partnering with companies to synthesize custom compounds, and offer a portfolio of fine chemical products that are critical to multiple industries.

ESIM has been in business for more than 75 years. In addition to its expertise in crop production chemistry, ESIM has recently expanded its operations in other markets, including cosmetics and fragrances. The company uses its state of the art facilities to produce its supplies.

ESIM is a great fit for Sun Capital Partner’s expertise in the Chemicals industry. Current and prior companies include: Elix Polymers, a maker of ABS thermoplastic resins used to manufacture highend consumer goods, electronics, and medical devices and Emerald Performance Materials, a U.S. producer and marketer of specialty chemicals for food and industrial application.

We’re looking forward to partnering with the management team to help ESIM Chemicals reach its full potential.

Marc Leder Remarks on Albea Sale

In March, an affiliate of Sun European Partners sold Albéa, a global manufacturer of packaging for beauty and personal care products. Albéa is one of the world’s leading packaging companies, providing a wide range of solutions for the make-up, fragrance, skincare, personal and oral care markets.

The company’s product portfolio includes plastic and laminate tubes, mascaras, lipsticks, lip glosses, compacts, plastic closures and shells, spray-caps, jars, lids, cosmetic accessories, bags & promotional items. Albéa has manufacturing sites in Europe, Americas and Asia, with global headquarters based in Paris.

An affiliate of Sun European Partners first acquired Albéa in 2010, and during our ownership period we worked with the management team to drive a strong improvement in performance, including an 80% profitability increase. Our focus on operational excellence helped the company grow, and allowed it to develop new customers and a range of products.

Many thanks to the Albéa management team for their efforts in turning the business into a leading global packaging company. We’re eager to see Albéa continue to grow under its new ownership.

Sun Capital Foundation/Charity Blog

This year, the Sun Capital Partners Foundation donated $300,000 to charities that do important work both near our home in southern Florida and across the nation. Five great organizations were awarded contributions this year:

Boca Helping Hands, a food center, crisis resources center, and provider of job training

Handy, an organization whose mission is to embrace, educate, and empower vulnerable youth to become engaged, productive adults

Women in Distress, the only nationally accredited, and state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving in the Broward County area

Junior Achievement of South Florida, the world's largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices

YMCA, the only charity in Palm Beach County that has a Drowning Prevention Program with the goal to eliminate accidental death by drowning through education, outreach, training, and swim instruction.

Including this year’s donations, the Sun Capital Partners Foundation has cumulatively given over $11 million since its launch in 2008. I’m incredibly proud of the work that our foundation does, and that we are able to make a meaningful difference to peoples’ lives through our support of these selfless non-profit organizations.

Portfolio Company Blog – AMES Taping Tools

Earlier this year, a Sun Capital affiliate invested in AMES Taping Tools. Founded in 1939, AMES is the nation’s leading provider of automatic taping and finishing (ATF) tools, supplies and training for the professional drywall industry. With a network of approximately 100 company stores and franchised locations throughout the United States and Canada, AMES supports residential and commercial interior finishing contractors with the industry’s largest tool rental operation. While the company already has an unmatched national footprint, strong brand recognition, and a premium set of product offerings, we believe the business has even more potential for improvement.

At Sun Capital, we have strong experience in the manufacturing and distribution of building products and related services through current affiliated portfolio companies including Trulite Glass & Aluminum Solutions, a leading fabricator and distributor of architectural glass and aluminum, Arrow TruLine, a market-leading manufacturer and distributor of garage door hardware and fittings, Horizon Services, a premier residential provider of plumbing, heating and air conditioning services, and Demilec, the North American leader in spray polyurethane foam insulation.

With AMES, we see a great opportunity to grow the business by leveraging our experience and working with management to maximize operational efficiencies.

Each year, the community and local businesses of Boca Raton come together to raise money for the Boca Raton Police Athletic League (Boca PAL) by holding a half marathon and 5K race. This year was the 17th annual event held Spanish River Park.

The Sun Capital Boca Raton PAL Half Marathon, in combination with a 5K race was held on Sunday, November 6, 2016. Hundreds of runners and walkers participated in both events, which raised money for the Boca PAL.

As a proud sponsor of the half marathon, the team at Sun Capital Partners and I, were excited to help raise funds and support the great work the Boca PAL does for the youth of South Florida. The mission of the Boca PAL is to assist youth at risk of academic failure, substance abuse or criminal activity. Since 1991, the Boca PAL has provided safe places for children, ages 9 to 18, to go during non-school hours where structured recreational activities are held including boxing, tennis, dance, basketball, tutoring and other educational programs.

At the Boca PAL, Police Officers and other volunteer coaches act as role models by assisting with sports, leadership and educational activities that promote positive self-esteem, discipline and teamwork. All of these great programs are provided absolutely free of charge, thanks to ongoing donor support.

It is an honor to support the Boca PAL through sponsoring this annual event. You can see all the photos from the event on their Facebook Event page, and see the race results here. We look forward to continuing our support of the Boca PAL, and are grateful to all of the other great local organizations that chipped in to make this year’s marathon a huge success.

Philanthropy Blog: New Yorkers for Children

The Sun Capital Partners Foundation supports a number of organization in South Florida because it is important to make sure our contributions support the local community. However, neither Sun nor I limit our vision to our home region. New York City is also very near and dear to my heart. Sun Capital has an office in midtown and my family spends a great deal of time in the tri-state area, and I personally support a number of New York-based organizations.

One I proudly support is New Yorkers for Children (NYFC), a non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of youth currently in or aging out of foster care. It is NYFC’s mission to reach fostered youth in New York City and empower them to achieve their ambitions. In partnership with the Administration of Children’s Services (ACS), NYFC improves the well-being of children in foster care through education, career development, and the acquisition of life skills. They also advocate for strengthening the child welfare system.

Of the more than 11,000 children currently in foster care in New York City, 40% are 12 years old or above. This age group is particularly at risk as they will soon be transitioning out of the child welfare system. Since 1996, NYFC has distributed more than $50 million of support for youth in foster care in the form of meaningful programs, college scholarships, tutoring, job training, and networking opportunities. Each year they positively impact lives of more than 1,000 children and young adults through signature programs such as the Back-to-School Package Program, the Spirit Award, the Guardian Scholars Program, the YOUTH CAN! program, and the Youth Advisory Board.

I am proud to support NYFC through activities such as the Support-A-Scholar Celebration, which recently held its fourth annual celebration. The fundraiser presented attendees with a fund-a-scholar opportunity that covers the annual cost of one breakthrough student.

I was also happy to support the NYFC by attending the Annual Fall Gala. This year marks the NYFC’s 20th anniversary and the milestone gala celebration honored the great work done over the past two decades, and raised more than $1.3 million for youth in foster care. It is an honor to support NYFC and the youth in foster care, alongside so many of the city’s most philanthropic individuals and hard-working organizations that positively impact the lives of children in need in the New York City area.

Bracing for Hurricane Matthew

We are in full preparation mode as we brace our families, homes, and the Sun Capital Partners headquarters for the potential landfall of Hurricane Matthew over the next few days. With dangerous weather approaching, we are taking all the necessary steps to ensure the safety of our team and their families including the initiation of disaster recovery procedures and business continuity plans. While we batten down the hatches at work and make arrangements to cope with the weather, I am more grateful than ever for the organizations that help those less fortunate in our communities during such weather and natural disasters.

The Sun Capital Partners Foundation is a proud supporter of organizations that offer invaluable aid to families and children in times of need. These caring people not only offer assistance during weather emergencies, but also provide daily support for victims of domestic abuse, neglect, homelessness and poverty. One such organization we support is HANDY, whose ethos is Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantage Youth.

Especially in Florida, where weather-related emergencies are not unusual, HANDY is a critical helping hand for displaced and at-risk young people in the community. This award-winning non-profit offers an expansive list of programs to help children and young people who have been removed from their homes because of domestic violence, substance abuse, physical and/or sexual abuse, or abandonment. The team at HANDY has played an instrumental role in keeping many children safe during disasters, natural or otherwise.

This year the Sun Capital Partners Foundation has donated $100,000 to HANDY to advance their mission and capacity to help others. Just as HANDY supported displaced youth following the earthquake in Haiti not so long ago, we are sure to see this organization and other charitable institutions like it hard at work and lending a hand in relief efforts, should Hurricane Matthew hit our communities. Unfortunately, it is times like these that illustrate the vital importance of organizations like HANDY to the youth in our community. I am thankful for the staff and volunteers at HANDY, and grateful to have played a small part in helping them reach more children in need.
